According to a new study, having type 1 diabetes has no association with an increased risk of hearing loss. Scientists drew this conclusion by comparing 1,150 people with type 1 diabetes with approximately 300 of their partners who did not have the condition. The results indicated no overall difference with hearing ability between the groups. However, the study did reveal that people with type 1 diabetes with higher HbA1c readings for longer amounts of time had an increased risk of developing a hearing impairment.
To better understand the relationship between diabetes and hearing loss, further research is necessary. While the findings are promising, the research was limited to reviewing the hearing of married individuals, who tend to be healthier overall.
