Diabetes Health in The News: Study Links Diabetes to Higher Hospital Readmission Rates

A study conducted by a team at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor has concluded that those who have been diagnosed with diabetes are more likely to be readmitted to the hospital than patients who do not have diabetes. This conclusion was based upon two studies, each of which used a different dataset.

The first study reviewed the records of 7,763 patients that had been admitted to the University of Michigan Health System and had been diagnosed with diabetes upon admission. The second dataset looked at a larger population of 37,702 patients that had been discharged from the same health system with a discharge diagnosis of diabetes. The first study showed those with diabetes had a 26% readmission rate compared to a 22% readmission rate in those without. The study showed that patients who took advantage of diabetes services may have lower emergency room revisits, but further research is needed in this area.

These findings were published in Clinical Diabetes and Endocrinology on March 22, 2017.
