Vermont’s Brattleboro Memorial Hospital has started to focus more on pain management to ensure that their patients, have pain relief, without over-prescribing opioids.
Vermont is in the middle of an opiate addiction crisis. Administrators are taking steps to combat the abuse of these medications while still treating pain. The additional steps used include staff education, increased patient communication, and improved interaction with outside organizations that can provide assistance.
A particular emphasis has been given to pain medication for people who are using Suboxone, a drug that helps to treat opiate addiction. Treating the pain for these patients can be tricky, and doctors need to sort out who is asking for pain medication because of legitimate pain and those who seek it out due to dependency.
