Three medical groups have recently released evidence-based guidelines with information on how to manage a diabetic’s foot.
The Society for Vascular Medicine, the American Podiatric Medical Association, and the Society for Vascular Surgery created these guidelines to explore five major areas: prevention of ulcers, wound care, ostio my e litis osteomyelitis diagnosis, off-loading, and peripheral arterial disease.
The agencies also highlighted the importance of doctors examining the feet of diabetic patients during every visit. They issued five recommendations for diabetic foot care, including the prevention of ulcers with proper glycemic control and patient education. High-risk patients may also be encouraged to wear customized therapeutic footwear.
These findings were published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery in February 2016.
