New findings published in Breastfeeding Medicine indicate that women with gestational diabetes during pregnancy are at a greater risk of experiencing a low milk supply than women without the disease. Researchers from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center examined the electronic medical records of about 640 women who visited their Center for Breastfeeding Medicine from June 2011 to May 2013.
This study showed that almost 15% of women who had a low milk supply also had a history of gestational diabetes. This was compared to just over 6% of women who experienced lactation problems but did not have a low milk supply. Further research is needed to understand fully how maternal glucose intolerance could impede lactation.
These findings were published in Breastfeeding Medicine in February 2016.
