On January 11, 2016, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (or CMS) announced that its health information technology mandate will move in a different direction. In recent years, the federal government has prioritized the Meaningful Use program which focused on rewarding medical providers for using technology and electronic health records (EHR). The aim will now look at the outcomes that this technology achieves for patients.
Now, the health IT initiatives of CMS are more concerned with improving outcomes. It is believed that interoperability will be crucial for this goal to work, and medical providers believe that CMS should use new incentives to reward medical providers and facilities that show improvement.
