A recent study has found that walking burns more calories than previously believed. According to researchers from Southern Methodist University, the leading standards regarding calories burned when walking on firm, level ground conditions are often inaccurate. The research team reviewed numerous cases and found that common equations used to determine the number of calories expended while walking were too low 97% of the time.
SMU scientists are now developing a new standardized equation to predict more accurately calories burned when walking. This equation is said to be about four times more accurate for adults and children together and 2-3 times more accurate for adults only. The equation was also designed to apply regardless of walking speed, weight, and height.
These findings were published in The Journal of Applied Physiology on March 1, 2016.
