Research Report: High BMI Linked to Chronic Kidney Disease

A recent South Korean study is debunking the idea that it is possible to be “fat and fit.” Researchers have found that obese and overweight individuals who are otherwise metabolically healthy continue to be at a high risk of developing CKD, or chronic kidney disease.

As part of the Kangbuk Samsung Health Study, researchers examined South Korean participants 18 years or older who had been examined by a physician at the Health Screening Center from January 2002 – December 2008. Researchers reported that the five-year incidence of CKD was 6.7 cases in every 1,000 obese people and 3.5 cases in every 1,000 overweight people when compared to individuals of average weight.

These findings were published in Annals of Internal Medicine on February 8, 2016.
