Microbial Contamination Leads to Recall of Type 2 Diabetes Drug

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, recently issued a voluntary recall of two lots of Riomet. Also known as metformin hydrochloride, this medication has been identified as contaminated. Consumers who have the recalled medication should stop use immediately and either discard or return it to the place of purchase.

Use of this contaminated medication could increase infection risk, especially in patients who are immunocompromised. Scopulariopsis brevicaulis via the respiratory tract is the greatest risk, and it may lead to pneumonia and sinusitis, among other problems. To date, the company states it has received no reports of adverse effects.
